WEEK THREE (Sept. 29 - Oct. 4)
It must be the “leaf peepers” who keep things so hopping
at the Memorial. It didn’t seem to
matter whether we opened or closed, we couldn’t get out until nearly an hour
after our scheduled time.
Johnson’s are comfortable with both of us giving the tours and we pretty
much run our own show now. On Sunday,
we had more buses so had to leave Church again after only Sacrament
Meeting. There were several AF people in
the group that I knew so we had a little visit.
Monday Vance and Leslie Standifird came to the center. They are currently working in the Boston
Temple. Rhonda talked to them a while
but I only got to say a quick hello as there was a steady stream of visitors. This week we have had about as many
non-members as members on our tours.
Several of the groups seemed very interested and said they would read
the Book of Mormon which we gave them. I
think we gave out six copies this week, all with promises. Wednesday evening the Mission President
(Stoker) came to stay with the Johnson’s.
Elder Johnson set us up to meet with him about as soon as he arrived as
we were scheduled to have our first “P” day on Thursday. We had a good visit with him and he expressed
how glad he was to have us here which made us feel pretty good. He told Rhonda we could plan to go to
Braxten’s baptism in November so she was excited!

Thursday we really did have a day off. Fairly early we headed to Barre, VT. Every time we tell the story of the granite
monument, we mention the granite coming from the quarry in Barre (Rock of Ages)
so we decided to check it out. It really
is quite an operation to recover the granite from the mountain. 
We toured the mining site and also saw their
manufacturing plant. Both were very
interesting.
From Berre we went to
Montpelier, VT. This is the smallest
city in the U.S. to house a State Capital.
The town is approximately 8,000 people.
The State House was very nice and we had a very informative tour guide
so it was a fun trip. After the State
House, we went up the road a little farther (Waterford, VT) to the Ben and
Jerry Ice Cream manufacturing plant. It
was interesting but not much of a tour.
The sample of ice cream we got at the end of the tour was also pretty
small. The tour leader says the
smallest container they make is a half-pint.
Well, our sample was about a half-cup.
By the time we got back home I cleaned off the back of the car and then
it was dark and time to start make preparations to go back to work tomorrow.

We have tried walking up and down the highway (which is about the only place we have to go from our place). But the road is quite busy and shoulder-less. So this week we started walking up and back on a quarter-mile stretch that includes our place and a few neighboring properties.
